Split Ends

Image Description: A close-up of a person’s hand holding a single hair with frayed, split ends between their thumb and forefinger.

This photograph is closely examining a strand of hair with several frays. Chipped nail polish allows the viewer to peer into the life of the subject holding their hair, how this person presents and takes care of themself. It is intimate noticing the smallest details.

As hair grows, it carries visible signs of damage, accumulating breakage over time. It tells a history of the person growing it, how it is altered or changed to communicate identity.

These changes can result in splitting, showing how queer people – their identities, desires, or roles – are dissected, and aspects of themselves may become fragmented with time
