Masking
Image Description: A sunset photo showing the sun near the horizon. There are trees in the distance and an open grassy field in front. The sky has orange and purple tones.
This is a sunset that I thought was very beautiful so I decided to take a picture. As I was looking through the pictures I took I noticed that there is an outer rim of the sunset that popped out in this picture. This is just a reflection from the camera but I actually found it interesting and felt like it could have meaning here, in this study. Many queer individuals are closeted because they don’t feel safe coming out. So they mask and create this other image for others to see. The circle of the sun being reflected can show the part of themselves queer individuals share with the world, while the beautiful sunset itself, the real one, shows the entirety of who we are, not just the aspects we share with everyone else. While every person’s journey is different, we all struggle with knowing when to come out and who to come out to. This is a very difficult aspect of being queer, feeling trapped and not being able to express ourselves freely. But once we do, it is a wonderful feeling.
