The Rainy Ducks
Image Description: A group of yellow duck statues wearing raincoats is arranged on a paved surface. They are positioned near wooden sculptures, and the ground appears like asphalt.
These ducks are from a place near my house that makes wooden furniture and also ducks, apparently. When you look at these ducks, you can interpret what they’re feeling in a variety of ways. Firstly, the ducks with the raincoats could be seen as the ones being themselves since they are wearing such vibrant outfits. Another way this could be seen is the duck without the raincoat could be thought of as the one that stands out and is different from the rest of the group. The three ducks wearing the raincoats are all identical, they are presenting how they are “supposed” to. But the duck without the raincoat shows how many queer individuals feel. This duck isn’t like the rest and doesn’t adhere to what society expects but rather is enjoying the rain, which is a very powerful message to send. It is also possible that this duck feels like it doesn’t belong since it is smaller than the rest and kind of hidden in the back. A slightly sadder take, but still one that represents queer youth quite well. Either way, this also goes along with what we have been discussing about queerness in nature and how people so often act as though being queer is absurd when in fact it is so normal. Ducks are meant for the water, their feathers are designed for water to wash off of them, their feet are designed to glide through it, but yet the other ducks are wearing raincoats. So while they might think the other duck is the strange one, that duck is actually the one that is staying the closest to nature. The others feel compelled to follow the expectations that have been created, rather than being themselves. This is very similar to how many people in the queer community feel. I would also say that it especially represents how trans people feel. Unfortunately, the transgender community is widely misunderstood and many believe that it is "unnatural" to identify with a different gender than you were born with. But this is far from the case, the main reason trans people transition is because of how out of place they feel in their own bodies, the gender they identify with is what feels the most natural to them.
